Understanding the Piano Keyboard 🎹

The piano keyboard is a pattern, and once you crack the code, you can name every single key! Here is what a standard piano or keyboard looks like:

• ⚪ White keys: There are 52 white keys on a full piano (7 different note names that repeat).
• ⚫ Black keys: There are 36 black keys grouped in sets of 2 and 3.
• 🔄 The pattern repeats! The same note names (A, B, C, D, E, F, G) repeat over and over across the keyboard.

Drum Dog 🐶 loves this part because patterns are like rhythm—once you feel the beat, it all makes sense! The black keys make the pattern easy to spot. Look at your keyboard and find the groups of 2 black keys and groups of 3 black keys. See the pattern? 2, then 3, then 2, then 3, all the way across! 🎉

The White Keys: Meet Your Note Friends 🤝

There are only 7 white key names that repeat all over the keyboard. Let us meet each one with help from our animal pals:

• 🐱 C: Note Cat's favorite! Find C just to the LEFT of any group of 2 black keys. C is the captain of the keyboard!
• 🐶 D: Drum Dog's note! D sits between the two black keys in the 2-key group. He loves being sandwiched in the middle!
• 🐘 E: Echo Ellie's note! E is just to the RIGHT of the 2-black-key group. She trumpets it loud and proud!
• 🦊 F: Flute Fox's note! F sits just to the LEFT of any group of 3 black keys. He plays it on his magical flute!
• 🦒 G: G-Giraffe's note! G is between the first and second black key in the 3-key group. She stretches her neck to see all the G's!
• 🎹 A: A is between the second and third black key in the 3-key group. Every animal friend loves singing A!
• 👳 B: Melody Monk's favorite! B is just to the RIGHT of any group of 3 black keys. B stands for "Best note ever," says the monkey!

The musical alphabet goes from A to G, then starts over at A again. That is right—there is NO H in music! 😵 Piano Panda thinks that is the silliest thing ever.

The Black Keys: Sharps and Flats 🌃️

The black keys have two-part names, like superheroes with secret identities! 🥞 A black key to the RIGHT of a white key is called a sharp (think "sharp like a shark fin pointing up"). A black key to the LEFT of a white key is called a flat (think "flat like a pancake pressed down").

How to Use Your Piano Notes Chart 📋

A piano notes chart works best when you use it in fun and creative ways. Here are our animal friends' favorite tips:

1. Place it above your keyboard. Tape the chart to the wall right behind your piano keys so you can glance at it while you play. G-Giraffe 🦒 loves this because her neck is long enough to see it from anywhere!
2. Point and say. Use your finger to point at a note on the chart, say its name out loud, then find and play that note on the real keyboard. Echo Ellie 🐘 says repeating it out loud makes it stick in your brain!
3. Quiz yourself. Cover up the labels with sticky notes and see if you can name each key by yourself. Note Cat 🐱 gives you a proud purr for every correct answer!
4. Match colors. If your chart uses colors, put matching stickers on your actual piano keys. Drum Dog 🐶 has rainbow paw stickers on all his keys!
