C D E F G Notes on Piano - Your Animal Note Parade! 🎪

Roll up, roll up! The Animal Note Parade is about to begin! 🎪 Today, five of our cutest animal friends are marching across your piano, and each one has a special note to teach you. By the end of this parade, you will know the first five notes of the musical alphabet -- C, D, E, F, and G. That is enough notes to play hundreds of songs! Let us meet our musical animals one by one. 🎉

C is for Cat - Meet Note Cat! 🐈

Leading the parade is Note Cat 🐈, the proud owner of the C note! C is the most important note on the piano. It is called "middle C" when it sits right in the center of the keyboard, and it is the first note almost every pianist learns.

How to find C: Look at your piano keyboard. See those groups of TWO black keys? The white key just to the LEFT of any group of two black keys is C! Note Cat loves to curl up right next to those twin black keys -- it is her favorite spot on the whole keyboard! 🐱

D is for Dog - Meet Drum Dog! 🐶

Right behind Note Cat comes Drum Dog 🐶, marching to the beat of his favorite D note! D is the white key sitting right between the two black keys in any group of two.

How to find D: Find any group of TWO black keys. The white key SNUGGLED in the MIDDLE between those two black keys is D! Drum Dog says: "D is for Dog, and I sit Dog-gone right in the middle!" 🥁

Play D: Use your right pointer finger (finger 2). D has a bright, bouncy sound -- just like a happy puppy! Play C with your thumb, then D with your pointer. Thumb, pointer. C, D. Good boy! 🐶

E is for Elephant - Meet Echo Ellie! 🐘

Here comes Echo Ellie 🐘, trumpeting her E note loud and proud! E is the white key just to the RIGHT of any group of two black keys.

How to find E: Find a pair of two black keys. The white key on the RIGHT side of that pair is E! Echo Ellie stands tall and waves her trunk at the E key. Her big ears help her hear every echo of every note she plays.

Play E: Use your middle finger (finger 3). E has a clear, ringing sound. Play C-D-E in a row: thumb, pointer, middle. That is your first three-note melody! 🎶 Echo Ellie loves to repeat things, so play C-D-E three times and feel how smooth it sounds.

F is for Fox - Meet Flute Fox! 🦊

Playing her magical flute, Flute Fox 🦊 dances onto the F note! F is the white key just to the LEFT of any group of THREE black keys.

How to find F: Now look for groups of THREE black keys (not two). The white key on the LEFT of that triple group is F! Flute Fox says: "F is so easy to find -- just look for THREE black friends and I am right beside them on the left!"

Play F: Use your ring finger (finger 4). Play C-D-E-F in a row and listen to the notes climb higher and higher. It sounds like walking up stairs! 🕌

G is for Giraffe - Meet G-Giraffe! 🦊

Last but certainly not least, stretching her long neck all the way to the top of our parade is G-Giraffe 🦊! G is the white key sitting between the first and second black keys in a group of three.

How to find G: Look at a group of THREE black keys. After the first black key (the leftmost one), the very next white key is G! G-Giraffe likes to say: "Just go one white key past F!" Because G sits right next to F.

Play G: Use your pinky finger (finger 5). Now play all five notes in order: C-D-E-F-G. Thumb, pointer, middle, ring, pinky. Did you hear the notes going up-up-up like G-Giraffe's neck reaching for the highest leaves? 🌳

Play All Five Notes Together! 🎶

Now that you have met all five animal friends, let us play something together! Piano Panda 🐼 has put together a super fun exercise:

Going UP the parade (use right hand):
C (thumb) - D (pointer) - E (middle) - F (ring) - G (pinky)
Say it with the animals: "Cat! Dog! Elephant! Fox! Giraffe!"

Coming BACK DOWN:
G (pinky) - F (ring) - E (middle) - D (pointer) - C (thumb)
Say it backwards: "Giraffe! Fox! Elephant! Dog! Cat!"

Melody Monk 🐒 calls this the "Animal Slide" -- and it is the foundation for so many songs you already know! "Mary Had a Little Lamb" uses C-D-E. "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" uses C-D-E-F-G. "Ode to Joy" uses C-D-E-F-G. See? Those five notes unlock a whole world of music!
