Lesson 1: Meet the Piano with Note Cat! 🐱🎹

Hello, music explorer! Welcome to your very first piano lesson. I am Note Cat, and I am going to show you around the most amazing instrument in the world — the piano! Meow-velous music is waiting for you. Are you ready to begin?

The Piano Keyboard

A piano has a long row of keys. Some pianos have 88 keys, and some smaller ones have 61 keys. Don't worry — you don't need to learn all of them at once! Every key makes a different sound when you press it. Press a key on the left side of the piano. What do you hear? Now press a key on the right side. Do they sound different? The piano is a magical instrument because it can make so many different sounds!

High Notes and Low Notes 👆👇

Imagine a big friendly bear and a tiny little bird. The bear has a deep, rumbly voice — that is like a low note on the piano. The bird has a high, chirpy voice — that is like a high note on the piano.

On the piano, the keys on the left side play low notes. They sound deep and dark, like a bear growling or thunder rumbling far away. The keys on the right side play high notes. They sound bright and sparkly, like a bird singing or stars twinkling in the sky. Try playing the lowest key and then the highest key. That is the whole range of the piano!

White Keys and Black Keys ⚫⚪

Look at the piano keyboard. You will see white keys and black keys. The white keys are like vanilla ice cream scoops, all in a nice neat row. The black keys sit on top in groups of two and three, just like chocolate chips on a cookie!

Can you spot the pattern? Two black keys, then three black keys, then two again, then three again. This pattern repeats all the way up and down the keyboard. The group of two black keys looks like a little pair of chopsticks. The group of three black keys looks like a tiny fork with three prongs. This pattern helps you find your way around the piano without getting lost!

Meet Middle C 🐱

There is one very special white key on the piano. It is called Middle C. Can you guess why? Because it sits right in the middle of the keyboard! Middle C is the white key just to the left of the two black keys near the center of the piano. It is the first note every pianist learns, and it is my favorite note of all time!

Find Middle C on your piano. It is the white key directly to the left of the pair of two black keys that is closest to the center of the keyboard. Press it gently and listen to its bright, happy sound. Congratulations! You just played your very first note on the piano. That deserves a big Note Cat high-five!

Let's Play a Game! 🎮

Here is a fun game to play with your piano. I will give you a challenge, and you try it on your keyboard:

1. Find Middle C — press the white key to the left of the two black keys in the center.
2. Play a low note — go far to the left and press any key. Does it sound like a bear?
3. Play a high note — go far to the right and press any key. Does it sound like a bird?
4. Count the black key groups — how many groups of two black keys can you find? How many groups of three?
5. Walk your fingers — start at Middle C and play each white key moving to the right, one by one. That is called walking up the piano!

Sit with your child at the piano and explore together. Let them discover the sounds freely before introducing structure. A 5-10 minute exploration session is perfect for this first lesson. Celebrate every note they play with excitement and encouragement!
