About "Hot Cross Buns" 🍩

"Hot Cross Buns" is a very old song from England. Long ago, street vendors would walk through the town calling out "Hot cross buns!" to sell their fresh baked goods. The song uses a very simple pattern that goes down step by step: E-D-C, E-D-C. Because it only uses three notes, it is the perfect first song for every new pianist.

Find Your Notes on the Piano

Before we play the song, let's find the three notes we need. Place your right thumb on Middle C (remember, that is Note Cat's special note). Your pointer finger should rest on D (Drum Dog's note), and your middle finger should rest on E (Echo Ellie's note). These three fingers on these three keys are all you need to play the entire song!

The Rhythm of Hot Cross Buns

Remember our rhythm lesson with Melody Monk? "Hot Cross Buns" uses a special rhythm pattern. Sing the words to find the beat: "Hot (quarter note) cross (quarter note) buns (half note)!" The word "buns" is held for two beats, because it is a half note. Here is the full rhythm pattern for one line:
