Music Notes Names and Values - Meet the Note Family! 👨👩👧👦
Hi there, little musician! 👋 Piano Panda 🐼 is so excited to introduce you to something really, really important in music: note values! Every time you press a key on the piano, you are making a sound. But how LONG should that sound last? That is where note values come in! Think of notes like a happy family 👪 -- each family member has a different job, and each one stays around for a different amount of time. Ready to meet them? Let us go!
Meet the Whole Note - The Grandpa Note 👴
The whole note is the oldest and wisest member of the note family. Grandpa Whole Note looks like a big empty oval -- kind of like a hollow doughnut 🍩 without the hole! When you play a whole note on the piano, you hold the key down and count slowly to four. One... two... three... four!
Piano Panda says: "A whole note is so slow and steady, it is like a sleepy turtle 🐢 crossing the road. Give it all four beats -- no rushing!" Imagine Drum Dog 🐶 tapping his drum exactly four times while you hold one note down. That is how long Grandpa Note lasts!
Meet the Half Note - The Daddy Note 👨
Next up is the half note! The half note looks like Grandpa Whole Note, but with a tall stem sticking up from the side -- like a lollipop 🍭! When you play a half note, you hold it for two beats. That is half as long as Grandpa Whole Note. Count: one... two!
Note Cat 🐱 loves half notes because you can fit exactly TWO half notes inside one whole note. It is like cutting a big pizza 🍕 in half -- each half is still yummy, just shorter! Two half notes equals one whole note. Easy peasy lemon squeezy! 🍋
Meet the Quarter Note - The Baby Note 👶
Say hello to the quarter note, the busiest little note in the family! A quarter note looks like a half note, but its circle is filled in all black -- like a chocolate chip 🍬 with a stick! When you play a quarter note, you hold it for just one beat. Count: one!
Echo Ellie 🐘 loves to stomp along to quarter notes because they are so bouncy and quick. You can fit FOUR quarter notes inside one whole note, or two quarter notes inside one half note. Flute Fox 🦉 says quarter notes are like popcorn 🍿 -- they pop pop pop pop, one after another!
How Many Beats Does Each Note Get? 🧮
Let us put it all together with a super easy table, brought to you by G-Giraffe 🦒 who is very tall and can see the whole picture:
- Whole Note (hollow oval, no stem) = 4 beats 🥁🥁🥁🥁 -- Grandpa Note!
- Half Note (hollow oval with a stem) = 2 beats 🥁🥁 -- Daddy Note!
- Quarter Note (filled oval with a stem) = 1 beat 🥁 -- Baby Note!
Melody Monk 🐒 has a fun trick to remember: "Whole note = WHOLE pizza (4 slices), Half note = HALF a pizza (2 slices), Quarter note = one QUARTER of the pizza (1 slice)!" 🍕 Now you will never forget!

Fun Rhythm Games to Play 🎲
Ready to practice? Here are some super fun games to try with your animal friends:
Clap the Family 👏
Piano Panda says clap your hands for each note value. One BIG clap for a whole note (and wait 3 more beats quietly), two medium claps for half notes, and four little claps for quarter notes. Mix them up and make your own rhythm pattern!
Animal Dance Party 💃
Drum Dog 🐶 will keep the beat while you dance. When he plays whole notes, move super slow like a sloth. For half notes, walk normally. For quarter notes, hop like a bunny 🐇! This is the silliest way to learn rhythm, and it really works!
Note Value Memory 🧠
Draw the three notes on cards and spread them out. Have someone call out "whole note!" or "quarter note!" and you grab the right card as fast as you can. Note Cat 🐱 says her record is 0.5 seconds -- can you beat her?
Understanding note values is the first step to reading sheet music. Once you know how long each note lasts, you can play any song! Want even more practice? Try our fun music theory games or jump into the interactive piano game. You can also explore our full lessons page for more note adventures!
You did it, superstar! 🌟 Now you know the three main note values. Give yourself a big round of applause 👏 from the whole Piano Kids animal crew -- Piano Panda, Note Cat, Drum Dog, Flute Fox, Echo Ellie, G-Giraffe, and Melody Monk are all so proud of you!
